How does david palmer die 24

One president in particular, David Palmer, stood out as a character who was a friend and ally to Jack and a president who knew how to handle a crisis. Haysbert was a series regular for three seasons, and was reduced to a recurring role for the show's fourth season, since at this point he was no longer President of the United States. It happened when Palmer was visiting his brother, Wayne D.

During a conversation with Wayne, Palmer stands in front of a window and is suddenly assassinated by a then-unknown assailant. Jack, who is framed for Palmer's assassination, sets out to find the killers and learns of their connection to a much bigger terrorist plot. It was later revealed that Palmer was killed because he was close to uncovering the truth about their plan and the people involved.

According to Dennis Haysbert, killing off Palmer wasn't his decision, though some may have assumed that Haysbert wanted to leave because he had recently landed the lead role in CBS' The Unit. However, this was not the case. Lynne Kresge : [Before walking away] yes Sir. I'll call Davidson immediately. President Palmer : Thank you. We'll leave for the airport now. President Palmer : Mike, who ended up flying the plane? Did you get a name?

I would've told you sooner but I figured you had enough on your mind already. President Palmer : [Over the phone] what is it Mr. Tony Almeida : Mr. President, we have a recording of Syed Ali collaborating with high ranking officials from three Middle Eastern countries in preparation in today's terrorist attack.

President Palmer : How long ago did this come to our attention? Tony Almeida : Just in the last few minutes. President Palmer : Who else knows? Tony Almeida : Our Division headquarters Sir. President Palmer : You have ties to the other agencies including the Pentagon which means everybody knows.

Tony Almeida : I tagged it a section four security but I did think it was important to keep going on the authentication process as quickly as possible. President Palmer : And how long would that be? Tony Almeida : We should have initial confirmation within the hour Sir. President Palmer : Let me ask you another question Mr. Why would Syed Ali record a conversation like this in the first place?

President, half the time these people don't trust each other anymore they trust us. My guess is that Ali wanted "ammunition" to protect himself. In case any of these three countries turned against him. Thank you Mr. I'll let you get back to work. Good job. Please pass on my appreciation to the rest of your staff. Tony Almeida : Thank you Mr. President Palmer : [after talking to Tony Almeida over the phone] there's evidence that there's three governments in the Middle East behind this bomb.

Mike Novick : Yes Sir, I gathered that. President Palmer : We could be at war soon, and once it begins, there's no guarantee that it will be limited to only these three countries. I've been thinking all day about something Lincoln said during the Civil War: "I claim not to controlled events, but confess plainly that events controlled me. Once this bomb actually goes off, my options will narrow very, very quickly.

General Bowden : [after entering his office with Lynne standing nearby] Mr. President Palmer : General Bowden,. General Bowden : I understand the bomb is over the Mojave now and it should detonate without causing immediate loss of life. President Palmer : That is our hope.

General Bowden : That's wonderful news Mr. President: congratulations on a truly remarkable achievement. President Palmer : Thank you General. General Bowden : And now perhaps it's appropriate to begin to discuss the matter of retaliation. President Palmer : Go on. General Bowden : Yes Sir, up to now the Joint Chiefs have been assuming the bomb was the work of the terrorist group Second Wave, now it appears that Second Wave had the backing of at least three governments.

President Palmer : That's not definite yet General. General Bowden : No Sir, I understand that but for planning purposes I think we should proceed as if it is. I request authority to activate plans to invade the countries in question. President Palmer : Activate? We have plans already in existence? General Bowden : We have plans for every conceivable contingency Mr. President Palmer : I see. So what do you mean exactly by "activate"? General Bowden : Putting the relevant military units on alert, beginning logistical operations, coordinating intelligence sources regarding the probable level of resistance to invasion by American forces.

President Palmer : Talk of an invasion is premature. General Bowden : I agree Mr. President, this is only the planning stages. President Palmer : [after looking at Lynn] activate your plan General but take no steps to implement without my direct authorization. General Bowden : [Before leaving] of course Mr.

I'm current, I'm instrument rated, and I'm going to be dead by the end of the day anyway Jack Bauer : The problem is you could be dead any minute George Mason : I can hang on for another half hour: that's all we need right? Jack Bauer : If you blacked out and this plane went down before it got to desert a lot of people are going to die and I know you don't want that George Mason : Come on Jack Jack Bauer : I know what you're trying to do.

At the same time, his Presidency was challenged by Alan Milliken , a former political supporter. David called in his ex-wife Sherry Palmer to help, but this situation quickly gained the momentum to unravel into personal disasters and death.

Palmer arrives and greets Mike Novick. After the events of Day 3, Palmer did not run for re-election, and so was an ex-President by Day 4. However, Mike Novick , a longtime friend, recommended he be brought in to assist the Acting President, Charles Logan , as he had shown poor judgment abilities; demanding the arrest of Jack Bauer, who at the time was staging a critical operation to apprehend the architect of the day's terrorist activities.

The operation failed as a result of Logan's poor decision making, and Palmer was brought in shortly thereafter and effectively led the country in the last part of Day 4. Logan was less than gracious in accepting the help, as he blamed Palmer when things went wrong, but took full credit when things went his way.

The Chinese government gained proof that Jack led the attack on the Chinese consulate and demanded Jack's extradition.

Palmer called Jack to thank him for his exemplary service to the country and told him that the Chinese government had proof of his role in the attack. When Jack asked what kind of proof they had, Palmer informed him that Howard Bern , a member of the team that went into the Consulate with Jack, made a full confession on tape. Palmer also said that the Chinese probably wanted Jack to implicate the United States government in the attack.

Jack insisted that he would never do that, and Palmer agreed. However, this decision was not up to him. Palmer informed Jack that a Secret Service agent was on his way to take Jack into custody. Palmer also promised Jack that he would do everything he could to bring him back to U. Palmer talks to Jack for the last time at the end of Day 4. Cummings ordered Spalding to kill Jack Bauer once he was in custody, in order to prevent the Chinese from extracting any information.

Novick gave this information to David Palmer. He paid his debt to Jack by warning him that the Secret Service was not just taking him into custody, but was instead planning on killing him. After Jack escaped, he called Palmer and thanked him for saving his life.

Palmer said that that would be the last time they would ever speak, because, for all intents and purposes, Jack Bauer was dead. Jack understood, and thanked him once more, saying that it had been a pleasure to work for him. Palmer hung up the phone and never spoke to Jack again. David Palmer was therefore one of the four people who knew Jack was alive after he faked his death, as far as Jack knew.

One day before Day 5 , he arrived at Los Angeles to meet with him and continue working with them. That same night, at around pm, David called Martha Logan. He told her he wanted to speak to her about a matter of national security that might concern her husband, President Logan. They agreed to meet some time. Wayne Palmer sees his brother has been assassinated. At am , while writing his memoirs at his brother 's penthouse apartment in Wilshire Blvd.

He died instantly. At the end of the hour, Palmer's killer was executed by Jack. Jack's investigation in the apartment, with Wayne's initially hesitant support, uncovered a clue which David had hidden in his memoirs. In the long term, it set off the chain of events that allowed Jack to take down Vladimir Bierko 's separatist group and to expose the Sentox nerve gas conspiracy.

It was later revealed that Palmer had attempted to contact Martha Logan , a good friend and First Lady of the United States, with the intent of talking to her about a "matter of national security".

This knowledge was what led to his assassination. Initially, Walt Cummings and James Nathanson were revealed as being complicit in the murder, but later it was discovered that Christopher Henderson arranged for the death, to prevent the First Lady from finding out that her husband, President Charles Logan was arranging to sell Sentox nerve gas to Dawn Brigade separatists led by Vladimir Bierko.

Over the next few years it was discovered that several other power brokers were behind the killing, including Graem Bauer and Alan Wilson. The next morning , Logan gave a filmed, faux eulogy remembering Palmer and was arrested immediately afterwards by the Secret Service due to evidence incriminating him in the assassination, which was obtained thanks to the efforts of Jack Bauer, Martha Logan, Mike Novick, Chloe O'Brian , Morris O'Brian , and Aaron Pierce.

Logan was led to his limousine as Palmer was given a gun salute before being placed on a plane headed for Washington, D.
