What is the difference between autonomy and independence

You function without others. Spot the difference? You can absolutely be autonomous AND dependent on others for help and support. You can act in accordance to your beliefs, with free will, and still exchange support and care.

The world is more connected and therefore more interdependent. Our products, largely because of technology, require increasing coordination and faster, more effective collaboration. Pure independence is simply impossible in the 21st century. First, identify your customers. We ask a series of questions to get clients there: 1 What does your individual group create? In other words, what are your routine outputs?

Who then needs or consumes those outputs? Those are your customers. So, for example, if you work in Finance and one of the things you routinely produce are budgets for division heads, then those division heads are one of your customer groups.

So this means that independence is something that is "not depending" on another thing, this is why the adjective form is used in common language, "I like to be independent", meaning I like to run my own life. I don't want to depend on anyone.

Autonomous is usually used in a unique way, I am on my own, I am autonomous, the adjective used being "autonomous government". There is no comparison, it is alone, yes it is the case that it is "independent", but in the case of autonomy, it is "independent from everything".

Unfortunately I came to find the former and the latter parts of your explanation contrary to each other. So, why would the teacher give Autonomy to the pupil at the classroom?

I think the above distinctions are not too exact. In other words, autonomy is circumscribed freedom to act while, independence is uncircumscribed freedom to act. For instance, Spain is an independent country, while Catalonia is an autonomous region. Catalonia has the freedom to act but within the limits set by the Spanish Constitution.

As an independent country, Spain can freely act without reference to another country but of course respecting the generally agreed international laws and norms. In the above example, a degree of autonomy freedom can be encouraged and allowed to the pupils or students but regulated by the rules or limits set by the class teacher or parents.
